Impressive from every angle: the Brunswick in Sage Creek

Function meets flexibility with this thoughtful design

A foyer doesn’t just serve as an entry point — it also sets the tone for the rest of the home.

Paul Michael Saltel, sales representative for the Brunswick — a new Randall Homes show home found at 331 Tanager Trail in Sage Creek — says the home’s foyer makes a great first impression.

“It’s a beautifully designed area,” he says. “Initially, it creates a sense of privacy because it’s not open to the great room. Then, you see the areas to its left and right.”

Look left, and you see a formal dining room with huge window, look right and you see a sunken mudroom and a discreetly placed hallway. “The dining area is a wonderful space that can be used either as a dining room, office or a multi-purpose or family-specific space,” says Saltel. “The mudroom is a separate yet accessible space with a transom window, bench, shelving and easy no-step access to the attached double garage.”

Regardless which area you’re in, access to the great room is seamless thanks to a doorway to the rear of the formal dining room and the aforementioned hallway next to the marvelous mudroom.

No matter whether you enter the great room via the kitchen or informal dining area, you find yourself in a bright, well-ordered and extremely livable space.

“Everyone who’s gone through the home really liked how large and bright it is,” he says. “All the large windows on the rear wall let in tons of sunlight from the south, while a smart layout uses all the available space extremely well.”

More specifically, each of the great room’s three spaces, the island kitchen, eating area and family room, was sized to offer maximum utility without overlapping.

A light-filled family room to the right of the eating area then finishes off the great room with plenty of space to relax — and an understated style that makes it a pleasure to spend time in.

“The clean, uncomplicated design looks great,” Saltel says. “There’s a TV niche with grey feature wall and low-profile entertainment unit that can hold a 55- or 60-inch TV, and the ribbon fireplace with its marble-style surround with natural maple trim is simple, yet beautiful.”

He adds that the kitchen and an expandable eating area are equally impressive.

A patio door on the kitchen’s rear wall leads out to a big composite deck, and there’s plenty of room in the eating area to extend a dining table out to seat 10 if you need to.”

Head upstairs via a striking maple-trimmed staircase, and you can’t help but marvel at the interesting yet efficient layout.

For starters, there’s a laundry room on the mezzanine level between the main floor and upper level that provides a distinct, out-of-the way place to do laundry. Ascend a short set of stairs, and you find a bright second floor that lays out four spaces (main bath, two secondary bedrooms, master suite) in a unique L-shaped configuration.

That placement makes for a well-isolated master suite that essentially has the left side of the upper level all to itself.

“It has everything you’d want in a master suite, it’s bright, spacious, has his/her walk-in closets and a beautiful three-piece ensuite with five-foot shower, grey vanity with quartz countertop, and his/her sinks. A marble-style vinyl floor really goes well with the grey vanity.”

Saltel says the Brunswick is proof positive a home can be designed to be unique, yet livable.

“Randall’s design team did a wonderful job with the Brunswick. They made it different, yet it still functions beautifully in every area. It has everything a family could possibly want — space, style, function and flexibility.”

Functional Flair - the Tuscan is adaptable, affordable and stylish

When it comes to family life, size definitely matters.

At first glance, a home that comes in well under the magical 2,000 sq. ft. mark might seem undersized. And at "just" 1,457 sq. ft., The Tuscan -- the newest show home from Randall Homes in Sage Creek -- might seem to be fighting out of its weight class in the family home category.

A quick tour through 51 John Pelland Road in scenic Sage Creek will prompt you to change your mindset, said Randall Homes sales representative Paul Michael Saltel. "Because the floor plan is so good, it feels much bigger than its listed square footage," said Saltel. "It is a very functional home. With about 1,100 sq. ft. of livable space downstairs, it makes a great family -- or empty nester -- home with more than 2,500 sq. ft. of space to enjoy."

More importantly, the home is very affordable, added Saltel. "You can get this home starting at $399,900 including lot, piles and driveway. This is a show home, so it has granite countertops and a backyard deck. The house for $399,900 would come without the deck and granite countertops, but would still include the beautiful laminate plank flooring that runs through the great room."

In a nutshell, nothing is sacrificed in The Tuscan amenity-wise. The foyer, for example, is exceptionally wide, and defined stylishly by taupe ceramic tile (though in the base model, the flooring might be a high-grade vinyl). The four steps up to the main living area feature the same laminate plank flooring running through the great room, and handrails on either side are dark oak, as is the capping on the one-third stub wall defining the stairs.

Then there's the great room itself, which is well-proportioned and deceptively large. The island kitchen is particularly spacious. "There's lots of room for more than one person to move around and create meals without bumping into each other," said Saltel. "The island is angled, which opens up room, and the aisles on either side of it are extra-wide. The granite countertops and glass tile backsplash are options, but the kitchen comes standard with the cabinets seen here (a smart walnut veneer), the laminate plank flooring and corner walk-in pantry."

Also standard is a huge dining area. In show home trim, it has a table that seats four to six. A table for 10 to 12 could be inserted into the generous space, and there would still be plenty of room to move. The dining area has also been placed next to patio doors leading out to a design feature that is both novel and practical. "Because of the great room's recessed design, you can put a huge back yard deck in out back without taking up space in the yard," said Saltel, "the deck installed here is nine feet deep by 17 feet wide, so it gives you plenty of extra space to barbeque and entertain."

As big as the dining area is, there's still three to four feet of buffer space between it and the family room, which is also deceptively big."It can easily hold a couch, loveseat and chair, as well as an entertainment unit for your TV," said Saltel. "It also has a neat feature at its rear -- a dark oak capped wall that defines it, and also separates it from the hallway that leads to the home's three bedrooms."

Once again, the available space is used masterfully in the bedroom wing. An L-shaped design has been utilized to achieve good separation between the four spaces inhabiting the wing. One secondary bedroom and the master suite are to the left with the master at the end of the hallway.

To the right is another bedroom and the four-piece main bathroom. The segmentation creates a nice, clean feel that makes for a higher degree of privacy and utility. There's also a main floor laundry housed behind two pairs of double bi-fold doors next to the bathroom - a clever, and convenient touch.

Meanwhile, both secondary bedrooms are oversized with huge windows and good-sized closets, features that kids will no doubt enjoy. Then, there's the master suite, a space that parents, likewise, will enjoy. "It has tons of space, and natural light just floods in from a huge picture window," said Saltel. "Taupe carpeting, taupe walls -- there's also a chocolate brown feature wall behind the bed -- create a relaxing feel, and there's also a three-piece ensuite with five-foot shower, and good-sized walk-in closet. The big windows are standard with Randall, and are a great feature because they allow so much light to enter the home in every room."

The additional 1,100 sq. ft. of livable space downstairs is a feature that families and empty nesters alike will enjoy, added Saltel. "A steel beam is standard, so there are no teleposts. Large egressed windows make the basement nice and bright. You can put in a massive rec room, as many as two bedrooms and still have plenty of room left over for storage space and a big mechanical room. This is an affordable, functional home that's ideal for young families, young couples or empty nesters.

After looking for a new home for 18 months and enduring countless bidding wars, Heather Allan decided there had to be a better way.

That’s when she thought about Randall Homes.

“I’d seen some of the homes Randall had designed and thought they were not only stylish, but affordable, so I ended up talking with Jason (Jaquet) at Randall,” she recalled. “I told him I wanted two things – a sense of community, and an affordable home. He then took me to one of Randall’s show homes in Sage Creek.”

The synergy between buyer, home and the surrounding community was immediate.

“As soon as I stepped into the show home, it felt like home – the big windows that let in all kinds of sunlight, the fact that the floor plan didn’t waste any space and the finishes that so beautifully framed the functional layout,” said Allan. “And the home was just the right size.”

Turns out, the home Allan chose was The Fairhill A, a 1,784 sq. ft., two-storey boulevard home on Edward Turner Drive on a compact lot. Both the lot and home concept perfectly suited her tastes.

“I liked the fact that the home had a low maintenance front and a bit of green space in back, along with a detached garage. I also liked the basic finishing package, though I decided to make a few key upgrades.”

After being led expertly through Randall’s design centre, Allan knew exactly what those upgrades would be.

“Things fell right into place after going through the design centre. I decided to put in a fireplace with entertainment unit, upgraded both the carpet and vinyl, chose rounded edge laminate countertops (instead of standard square) and put in a backsplash in the kitchen,” she said. “I knew I had it in my budget, so everything worked out perfectly.”

With the home model chosen and all the finishes in place, it was time to build the home. Seeing as it was the first time Allan had ever built the home, she was experiencing her fair share of trepidation. The worry proved all for nought due to the high standard of customer service provided by Randall.

“The customer service was simply outstanding,” Allan said. “I was able to put a hard hat on and watch the process. The trades working on the home were a very welcoming group. If there were some hiccups – there always are when you’re building a home – I got very good service when I wanted to make sure certain things would work out just right. They always kept me in the loop, or if I sent an e-mail, I got a response right away.”

That customer service also proved invaluable in terms of designing a home that offered the highest possible level of function, she added.

“The sales person made suggestions that were really helpful, such as saying I might want to put a plug-in outlet high up on the wall above the TV for a cleaner look, and that it might be a good idea to put a light socket in an eve outside if I was going to put up things like Christmas lights and other decorations. They also suggested putting an outlet in an area in the basement where the freezer would go. The customer service was just excellent.”

Most importantly, Allan – who moved into her new home August 1 – got both the home and neighbourhood that she desired. “When you build new, you get exactly what you want,” she said. “I came from a home built in 1922 that was drafty and always seemed to need repairs. With this home, everything is brand new. I won’t have to do anything to it for five to 10 years. Unlike my old home, it’s big enough to be a good entertaining space, and I must say Sage Creek is quite the community. Everything is within walking distance, the paths intersect with the lakes beautifully when I walk my dog, my neighbours take pride in their homes, and I’m always meeting great, new, friendly people.”

Allan said deciding to build with Randall Homes is one of the best decisions she’s ever made.

“I’m very happy with the customer service – it met, even exceeded my expectations,” she said. “Most of all, I absolutely love where I live – it makes me feel good when I come home every day to such a beautiful, well designed home. Best of all, I’m not broke; Randall made buying a new home attainable. Overall, I couldn’t have hoped for a better experience.”
